As per the FTP of India, export and import of goods are not allowed without an Importer Exporter code number. IEC code is issued by DGFT a competent authority, that acts under the administrative control of Ministry of Commerce and industry, GOI. The DGFT is authorized to grant IEC code license to the exporter or importer by giving an IEC code number.

An Import Export (IEC) Code is a 10-digit number given to a person or company, who do import or export goods and services from India.

How to apply for IEC on dgft website online:

To apply for IEC, one must visit the dgft website

  1. Register on DGFT Website:
    • Visit the DGFT website.
    • Click on the ‘Services’ tab on the homepage.
    • Select the ‘IEC Profile Management’ option from the drop-down list.
  2. Apply for IEC:
    • On the new page, click on the ‘Apply for IEC’ option.
    • Register by providing the required details and click on the ‘Send OTP’ button.

The application must be correctly filled and duly signed by the applicant authorized for this purpose under the partnership deed or pvt ltd company.

MANDATORY Requisites for IEC code application:

The firm or Proprietor applying for IEC code should have a valid registered address in India and a landline number. One must have a landline number in the name of the applicant firm as no IEC is issued without having a landline number to this effect. Any proprietor can have only one IEC number in case of more than one IEC is allotted, the same may be surrender to the regional office for cancellation.

What is the validity period of an IEC?

The validity period of an Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) is permanent. Once you obtain an IEC, it remains valid unless canceled or suspended by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). Unlike other licenses, the IEC does not require periodic renewal.
